Why Choose a Back Pain Doctor on Long Island?

Back pain can stem from various conditions such as herniated discs, muscle strains, spinal stenosis, or even poor posture. While many people turn to over-the-counter medications for relief, these remedies only provide temporary results. That’s where a back expert comes in. A specialist is trained to diagnose and treat the underlying causes of lumbar pain, offering targeted treatments that address the root of the issue.

Long Island is home to some of the most experienced experts in the field of spinal care. By choosing a doctor with in-depth knowledge of the spine, you’ll receive a comprehensive evaluation of your condition and a treatment plan that’s tailored to your needs. Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain or a recent injury, we will work closely with you to find the best solution for your recovery.
At Long Island Brain & Spine, we understand the complexities of spine pain and use advanced diagnostics and therapies to help our patients heal. Learn more about our spinal treatments here.

Common Conditions Treated by Back Pain Professionals

Herniated Discs
A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner material of a disc pushes out through the tougher exterior. This can put pressure on surrounding nerves, causing pain, numbness, or weakness in the back and legs. Herniated discs are a leading cause of sciatica, a condition characterized by pain that radiates down one leg.
Sciatica
Sciatica is a condition where pain radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which runs from your lower back down through your hips and legs. It’s often caused by a herniated disc or spinal stenosis, and it can result in sharp, shooting pain. At Long Island Brain & Spine, we use both non-surgical and surgical treatments to address sciatica at its source. Learn more about sciatica treatments.
Spinal Stenosis
This condition involves the narrowing of the spaces within your spine, which can put pressure on the nerves traveling through the spine. Spinal stenosis is more common in older adults and can cause pain, numbness, and muscle weakness. We are experienced in treating spinal stenosis with conservative treatments, but in severe cases, surgery may be required.
Muscle Strains and Sprains
Muscle strains and sprains are common causes of acute back and spine pain. They can result from lifting heavy objects, sudden movements, or even poor posture. While most muscle strains heal with rest, severe strains may require more intensive treatment to ensure a full recovery.

Non-Surgical vs. Surgical Solutions

When it comes to treating back pain, not every case requires surgery. In fact, many patients find significant relief through non-invasive treatments. However, in more severe cases, surgical intervention might be necessary. Understanding the differences between these two options can help you make informed decisions about your care.

Non-Surgical Treatments

Non-invasive approaches are often the first line of treatment for lumbar pain. These methods aim to relieve pain, restore mobility, and improve quality of life without the need for surgery. Some of the most effective procedures include:

  • Physical therapy: A tailored program of exercises and stretches designed to strengthen the back and improve flexibility.
  • Spinal injections: Steroid injections to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain around irritated nerves.

At Long Island Brain & Spine, we prioritize non-invasive methods to help patients achieve long-term pain relief. Many of our patients benefit from a combination of physical therapy and lifestyle modifications, which help them avoid the need for surgery.

Surgical Treatments

For patients with more advanced or persistent back issues, surgical options may be necessary. Surgery is generally considered after conservative procedures have been exhausted and if the condition is severely affecting the patient's daily life. Some of the common surgeries we perform include:

  • Discectomy: A procedure to remove the portion of a herniated disc that is pressing on a nerve, providing immediate relief from symptoms.
  • Spinal fusion: A surgical method where two or more vertebrae are permanently joined together to eliminate motion between them and relieve pain caused by instability or deformity in the spine.

How to Choose the Right Back Pain Professional on Long Island

Finding the right specialist is crucial to ensuring effective treatment and long-term relief. With so many options available on Long Island, it’s important to consider several factors when making your decision.

Where do I start? I’ve been dealing with multiple herniated disc in my neck for over 20 years with consistent pain. I’ve been living off of epidural injections and nerve blocks for most those years. After 2 unsuccessful back fusions I swore I would never get my neck fused. It got to a point after 3 epidural shots in the past year with unlivable pain and compressed nerves that I get it done. Thank god I didn’t use my orthopedic surgeon and was recommended to Dr. Palumbo! I’m 2 months out of surgery and pain free in my neck! Every visit was never a rush, he took the time to speak with you about any concerns and had great bedside manner before and after surgery.

Dr. McCormick is an awesome doctor. I went to see him after many failed attempts at relief for herniated disks, sciatica and back pain. He was caring and compassionate. He went over all options with me and viewed surgery as a last option. Needless to say I did have surgery with him and am happy to say i can walk again pain free. Thank you Dr. McCormick, and the staff is pleasant.

I can’t say enough positive things about Dr. Kakoulides and his awesome staff. I had spinal fusion surgery in January 2023 and the results could not be better. I have been able to return to running and rollerblading when prior to the surgery I was barely able to walk without pain. I really appreciated that Dr. Kakoulides wouldn’t perform the surgery unless all other treatment options were exhausted. Every staff member I encountered was professional, courteous and friendly. I wish I could remember more names for recognition. I do recall working with Michelle several times and she was very helpful and friendly, an absolute gem! I wish I could give more than 5 stars to Dr. Kakoulides and his team, they have been outstanding.

Dr. McHugh is a godsend. He is a meticulous surgeon. I was unable to stand or sit for more than 5 minutes when I went to his office. Dr. McHugh bent over backwards to get me into the OR as soon as possible and within 2 hours of surgery I could sit and walk. What is a real bonus is that Dr. McHugh is a surgeon with a personality that makes him so approachable and easy to speak to. I am so glad I met him
